Design and function of theatrical lighting fixtures varies based on application. Ellipsoidal spotlights are used for directional light, and have the ability to project gobos and patterns. Ellipsoidals like the Selecon Pacific and Altman Shakespeare include shutters to allow for framing and beam shaping. Fresnel spotlights offer a soft edge beam and can be focused for a variety of throw distances and beamspreads. Fresnel lenses employ stepped lenses, concentric circles embossed into the lens, and are often placed above the stage to fill in shadows and cast color washes. PAR cans are a staple of concert lighting, but have many uses as theatrical and architectural fixtures. PAR lamps are designated by wattage and beamspread, some have been ANSI coded. Intelligent lighting such as moving mirror and moving head automated luminaires are often designed to emulate and improve on conventional lighting fixtures. Profile moving lights employ lens trains, reflectors and optics similar to plano-convex lenses found in ellipsoidals, while many wash style movers utilize Fresnel lenses to offer the beam quality of a traditional Fresnel while providing the convenience of DMX controlled moving lights. Spot/Profile and wash moving lights are available from High End, Vari*lite and Elation. Followspots from RobertJuliat, Lycian, Strong International, Altman and Selecon/Strand are used in numerous productions, presentations, and performances to highlight action or to keep performers in the light despite their position on stage. Followspots are designed for specific throw distances, with varying photometric qualities and intensities to accommodate lighting for small theaters or as a lighting solution for arenas and larger venues. Scoops, softlights, and cyc lights are great for lighting backdrops and cycloramas. Many of the new fixtures intended for background lighting and wall washing employ LED's, providing access to RGB and RGB+A color mixing and eliminating the need for color media, color frames, and other accessories. A number of smaller fixtures can be integrated into scenery including PAR20's, birdies, inkies, and LED panels.
